At the age of nine, Marlene constructed her first garment. She taught
herself to design and
draft patterns by the
time she was twelve.
When it was time for
college, there was no
question she was
studying Textiles and
Fashion Merchandising.
Marlene received her
Bachelor of Science from
California Polytechnic
State University in San
Luis Obispo.
Marlene has been the
Costume Designer for
three groups in Fremont,
California but works
primarily with
Starstruck Theatre,
a leading youth regional
playhouse. She has
designed nineteen shows
in the past five years.
Her designs for
"Seussical The Musical"
were featured on New
York stages by two
separate production
companies.
As
a Costume Designer,
Marlene found herself
limited in show
productions by vintage
hats that she could
find. Frustrated with
designing around the
hat, she sought out the
Bay Area's leading
Millenary instructor,
Wayne Wichern, and began
studying with him. She
now designs "head to
Toe" using her own
ideas, not just those
she can find.
Marlene is constantly
exploring new ways of
treating fabrics
including texturization
techniques using rubber
which she learned from
the costume creator of
"Star Trek. The Movie."
She has studied garment
enhancement through
feathers which she
learned from the
designer of the
flamboyant "Teatro
Zinzanni."
Marlene has been a
member of the Bay Area's
Costume Guild Workshops
for many years. She
received the National
Women in Business Award
for her work with High
School students. She is
currently working with
WOW, (a group of women
fabric artists), who
show their art in the
Central Coast. |
